TimelyBills offers a feature called Category Mapping for online transactions, which are automatically synced via a bank connection. Once configured, category mapping helps automate the categorization of future transactions. Here's how it works:
Changing Categories for Transactions:
- Open the transaction details for any online transaction (bank-synced) you want to modify.
- Click the "Change Category" button.
- A popup titled "Category Mapping" will appear, allowing you to set category rules for past, current, and future transactions.
Category Mapping Options:
- This Only: Apply the category change to this specific transaction only.
- This & All Future: Apply the category change to this transaction and all future occurrences.
- Past, This, & All Future: Apply the category change to all past, current, and future transactions matching the rule.
Mapping Rules:
Category mapping follows a specific order to update transaction categories:- Category + Merchant → New Category: If both the category and merchant match a transaction, the category will be updated.
- Merchant → New Category: If the merchant matches, the category will be updated.
- Category → New Category: If the category matches, the category will be updated.
Whenever a new transaction is imported from your bank, the app checks and applies category mapping according to these rules, ensuring consistent categorization.
